Waste disposal of Laboratory waste

Non-hazardous lab waste can be disposed in the self-extinguishing grey-white containers.

Sharp items: always use yellow sharp containers, irrespective if it is non-hazardous material (safety reasons). If you happen to have a lot of broken lab glass, please use a dedicated large blue 50 l bin for that.

Cardboard boxes: In general: LSF takes care of boxes coming from the daily lab routine work only! For 60x40x40 sized boxes a maximum of 3 can be picked up per day. Larger amounts of boxes have to be disposed on your own in the respective waste rooms in each building as they count as fire load!

You need to fold the boxes and leave it in front of the lab. Boxes inside the lab won’t be disposed.

Procedure for waste collection of chemical contaminated waste:

Please, write a ticket to lsf@ist.ac.at to get the chemical waste picked up from your labs, including also the common equipment rooms.

  • Liquid waste containers need to be closed when handing over, and need to be clean outside
  • Solid waste containers (blue bins and white round canisters with red lid) need to be in a state that they are easily closed by our Team, otherwise we will provide an empty container for you to refill the overflow waste in a new container (so please, do write us in time). The full and easily to be closed container is then collected afterwards after your notification
  • Leave the closed/to be picked up waste containers in your lab, do not store/place them in the meantime on the hallway, etc
  • please write room number, which waste to collect and which canisters to bring in your mail, Thank you!

In case of questions, arising need of different waste category / waste container /… please contact lsf@ist.ac.at in order to discuss and plan your need.
